Workers on Arriva Rail North are to be balloted for strike action in a row over the role of guards.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union said members will vote on whether to take action, citing a failure to give assurances over the role’s future.

The union is involved in a row with Southern Rail on the same issue and also recently announced a ballot of its members on Merseyrail.

The role of the guard was “safety critical”, the union said.
